Sponsored Degree Programme
CGI’s Sponsored Degree Programmes offer you the chance to gain a degree, debt free, whilst starting your professional career and earning a competitive starting salary of £14,100.
University of Winchester
Join our programme and you’ll study towards an honours degree at the University of Winchester one day a week and spend the other four developing your career at CGI based in CGI’s Reading or Leatherhead offices. You’ll also benefit from a starting salary of £14,100, fully paid tuition fees and all the support you need to succeed.
We have two programmes; one that is Technical, designed for those who want to pursue an IT/Computing career and another with a Business Focus for those that are interested in Business Management and Project Management careers.
These courses take three years to complete and, with our sponsorship, you won’t have to pay a single penny in tuition fees. We’ll even provide the course resources and materials required, so there’s no need to worry about textbooks either. You can also use your laptop you are given when you join CGI to use at University.
You’ll spend your first two years working towards a Foundation Degree which gives you grounding in the degree fundamentals. The third and final year will top up the foundation degree into a full honors degree; so you will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology solutions. It’s a continuous process that will see you building further on your knowledge and experience. Throughout, you’ll be taught by a highly qualified team of lecturers, plus members of CGI who are brought in as guest lecturers in their expert fields. You’ll also have a designated programme leader, Stella McKnight, who’ll fully support you along the way.
Glasgow Caledonian University
Join our programme and you’ll study towards a BSc (Hons) in Computing at Glasgow Caledonian University one day a week and spend the other four developing your career at CGI based in CGI’s Glasgow office for four years.
Working at CGI
Previous sponsored degree students have worked in everything from Space and Defence to Bid Management, Cyber-Security to Project Management. The best thing about joining us is that while you may start in one of these areas, the opportunity to move internally is huge, so you can take control of your career from your first day. Our undergraduates have worked on top-secret national security projects, sent satellites to Mars, helped win multi-million pound projects and made sure that all our projects are planned and executed to the standards our clients expect.
Due to the nature of our business, you work on ‘projects’. This means you’re never doing the same thing and you can have different roles across various projects, so there is no ‘typical day’. It also may mean you are working on client site, in another CGI office or sometimes from home. It really does vary at CGI. And that’s the exciting thing, it really is up to you to shape and develop your career in the direction you want to go with the support of others.
To support you, you will have a designated People/Career Manager who will support you with your career development and professional conduct at CGI. You will also have Line Managers on your projects that look after you on a day-by-day basis. Alongside this you will have a Senior Mentor who supports your University studies and network within CGI and a ‘Buddy’ which is a current or graduated student of the programme to help you with anything else you may need.
We hold Open Evenings throughout the year for our Winchester Sponsored Degree Programme. This is where you can find out more about how the programme works and what sort of projects you could be working on. You’ll hear from CGI managers and representatives from the University of Winchester as well as getting a first-hand account from undergraduates on the programme. Join us for a drink and light buffet afterwards where you can have a more informal chat with everyone. Your parents/guardians are welcome to join.
We will be holding Open Evenings on the below dates in our Reading office, starting at 6.30pm. If you would like to attend, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your desired dates and number of attendees and we will confirm your attendance:
- 6th September 2016
- 18th October 2016
- 15th November 2016
- 17th January 2017
How many vacancies do you have?
We have around 40 vacancies (roughly 20 for each course) each year for our Sponsored Degree Programme.
Do I need to apply for the programme via UCAS?
No, the programme is independent of UCAS. This means you can still apply to UCAS at the same time as submitting an application to us and it doesn’t take up any of your options.
Will I miss out on the social side of going to university?
Not at all. Our sponsored degree students form a very strong friendship group and do a lot together socially and you can afford it as you’re earning a salary. Unlike University the students will use their weekends to socialise. And they take advantage of the CGI Sports and Social club where they get lots of discounts and money off comedy, theatre, music and more events.
I'd need to relocate to take part in the programme, can I?
Yes. CGI will cover up to £1,000 of relocation costs if you live outside of a reasonable travel distance. Most of our students choose to relocate to their base office and commute to university.
Many of our current undergraduates have relocated and we make sure to support each new intake and answer any location queries they have. Read up on thoughts from those who have relocated on Facebook.
What happens if I fail a course, module or a whole year?
While we look for the commitment to work hard and balance work and study, we know this is a big step and that some students may struggle with elements of the course. Regular contact with your tutors at the University and your manager at CGI will make sure we spot any difficulties you may encounter. We treat each person individually, and will work closely with you so you have all the support you need. We do expect our students to graduate with a minimum of a 2:1 in their degrees.
Am I guaranteed a job at the end of the programme?
You’ll already be a permanent employee, and will continue to be employed by CGI as long as you complete the programme successfully and meet our expectations.
Do you accept applications from people who need a work permit?
We welcome applications from anyone who is legally entitled to work in the UK without restrictions. We regret that due to current Home Office guidelines we’re unable to sponsor work permits for undergraduate positions.
