 Zuboff’s Laws…

“Everything that can be automated will be automated”

"Everything that can be informated will be informated"

The benefits of implementing Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to automate business processes that are standardised, rules based, and repetitive but liable to error and variation are well documented.

The benefits are not only operational cost savings through the reduction in labour hours but more importantly to the organisations that have been early RPA adopters who have documented  increases in process throughput, reduction in process backlogs, improvements in regulatory compliance and the elimination of errors and process variation.

Another benefit is the increased level of insightful data that can be gathered and aggregated using RPA rather than humans. Anyone who has tried to gather data relying on agents in call centres or back office operations knows how difficult it is to do and you can never be sure if the humans have remembered to record what they were meant to record. Robots never forget and record their steps and actions perfectly every time. This information can be used to identify further process improvements and / or can be fused with other data to provide powerful insightful information, used in developing new business solutions and services.

Robotic Process Automation is relatively straightforward to deploy without the need for any changes to an organisations IT infrastructure nor the need for coding; this along with significant tangible benefits means that organisations once they understand the technology will want to quickly pilot Robotic Process Automation commencing an end-to-end automation journey. Automating business processes across the organisation.

Industries that are labour intensive with highly repeatable processes are ones where Robotic Process Automation has already been widely utilised.

For Example:

  • Insurance
  • Financial Services
  • BPO
  • Local Government
  • Central Government
  • Law
  • Healthcare
  • Telecoms
  • Pharma
  • Retail

Typical processes that can be part or fully automated using Robotic Process Automation software are:

HR & Payroll

- New starters / leavers - Contractual changes – position, benefits, roles, responsibility - Permanent changes – increases in salary, adding benefits, contact details, address changes - Temporary changes – bonus payments, expenses payments, overtime - Attendance records - Absence records - Holiday records - Validation and reconciliation of payroll - Deductions – pension, union, travel card, loans

Back Office

Account Opening, Adjudication, Claims Processing, Credit Card Payments,  Order Management, VAT Number Validation , ERP Supplier Master Data Update are all Back Office processes that can be part or fully automated using Robotic Process Automation technology.

Finance and Accounting

Invoice processing, Purchase to Pay (P2P), Accounts Payable, Travel and Expenses (T&E) and F&A industry specific processes such as Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-money Laundering (AML), Exchange Daily update and Claims Processing.

No matter which industry you’re in, now is the time for your organisation to pilot Robotic Process Automation. If you’d like to hear more about RPA and how you may be able to realise the benefits it can provide, contact me at simon.greenwood@cgi.com or leave a comment.
