We work in a project-based environment, which means that there is no ‘typical day’ as you will work across a wide range of roles, industries and locations.

Software Development

Our Software Development higher apprenticeship is great for School Leavers wishing to pursue a technical career path and want to learn whilst earning at the same time.

The programme

In England, our Software Development Higher Apprenticeship is run in partnership with our training provider, Makers Academy. It is a 12 month programme including four months of upfront training and you will have Makers Apprenticeship Coach support throughout the apprenticeship. What’s better is that your learning is complemented by on-the-job training on real projects!

In Wales, our Software Development Higher Apprenticeship is run in partnership with our training provider, ALS apprenticeships. It is a 2 year programme and you’ll study one day per week at Bridgend college whilst spending the rest of your time working at CGI complementing your learning with on-the-job training on real projects!

Curriculum

In England, the Makers Academy course covers the following topics:

  • Object Oriented Programming
  • Web / Persistence and Recipes
  • JavaScript and Front-end Development
  • Software Projects
  • Test Driven Development

In Wales, the ALS apprenticeships course follows the following topics:

  • Database design and development
  • Website design and development
  • Professional practice
  • Programming
  • Networking
  • Security
  • Software development life cycles
  • Managing a successful computing project
Requirements

To have or be predicated to achieve at least 64 UCAS points across two A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above (excluding general studies) gained in the same academic year or a completed Advanced IT Apprenticeship.

Also a minimum of five A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent grades 4-9 on the new grading scale), including English, Maths and Science. For the IT focused programmes, your A-Levels (or equivalent) should include an IT related subject, unless you can show software programming/development ability through work experience or extra-curricular activities.

You will also have Line Managers on your projects that look after you on a day-by-day basis and a ‘Buddy’ which is a current or graduated student of a school leaver programme to help you with anything else you may need.

Software Testing

Our Software Testing higher apprenticeship is ideal for School Leavers that wish to pursue an IT/computing career and want to learn whilst earning at the same time.

The programme

Our software testing apprenticeship is run in partnership with our training provider, Firebrand training. It is a 16-month programme which offers a blended learning approach. You will have 15 residential training days (delivered in Bedfordshire) over the course of your apprenticeship, accommodation and food will be covered. To support alongside this residential training, you will learn additional content through online learning and webinars and you have Apprenticeship Coach support throughout the apprenticeship. What’s even better is that your learning is also complemented by on-the-job training on real projects!

Curriculum

During the course of your apprenticeship, you can expect to study modules such as the below, including others:-

  • Testing Tools & Testing Concepts
  • ISTQB Foundation Software Tester
Requirements

To have or be predicated to achieve at least 64 UCAS points across two A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above (excluding general studies) including a computing/IT/STEM subject gained in the same academic year or a completed Advanced IT Apprenticeship. A minimum of five A*-C (or new grading of 4-9) GCSEs (or equivalent), including English, Maths and Science. We also look for people with a passion for business, IT and a willingness to learn!
