London, United Kingdom, 06 November 2014

CGI (NYSE: GIB) (TSX: GIB.A) today announced that FTSE100 energy company Centrica’s UK retail division British Gas will use CGI’s Adapter solution to manage its customers’ smart meters via the Data and Communications Company (DCC), the shared infrastructure underpinning mass smart meter rollout in Britain.

CGI will supply British Gas with its Adapter solution that simplifies the process of connecting to the DCC under national roll-out plans. CGI’s Adapter meets the terms of connection set out in the Smart Energy Code and minimises the level of IT development change needed to an energy company’s own internal systems, making it easier and more efficient to be smart meter ready.

Already the leader in ‘Foundation Stage’ smart meters, British Gas has deployed more than one million smart meters to its domestic customers across Britain. Over half of those one million smart meters are supported by CGI through its Smart Data Services programme. The introduction of CGI’s Adapter means British Gas’ own systems will be ready to connect to the DCC ahead of mass rollout.

Tara McGeehan, vice president of utilities for CGI in the UK said: “The success of Britain’s Smart Metering Implementation Programme in part rests on suppliers’ ability to access and use the large volumes of data provided through the DCC. British Gas is already the largest installer of smart meters in the UK and this agreement sees them further demonstrate that commitment by taking an important step towards full rollout. Ultimately, smart meters will help households to better understand their energy consumption in order to take better control of their energy bills, whilst delivering an anticipated £17.1 billion in economic benefits to the UK.”

This contract builds on CGI’s experience of delivering smart meter data solutions in the British market and over 30 years of working with the utilities sector. CGI is developing and will operate the DCC’s data systems that will link smart gas and electricity meters with the business systems of utility companies. CGI recently announced an agreement with Telefonica, which sees the operator join its Smart Meter Data Service, offering greater choice to energy companies for connectivity to smart meters deployed during the current ‘Foundation Stage’.
